Why Does Orientation Matter?
The sun traces a specific path across the sky. In the northern hemisphere, windows facing South get consistent sunlight throughout the day, especially in winter when the sun is lower. Windows facing West take the full force of the hot afternoon sun during the summer.
Because of this, putting the same glass in every window of your house is often a mistake! A high-performance home might use a high solar gain glass (like LoE-180) on the south side to capture free heat in the winter, and a heavy solar control glass (like LoE-366) on the west side to prevent the home from overheating in the summer afternoon.
